In a bid to address this issue, our growing skills gap and as means to boost Malaysia’s digital transformation journey, yesterday Google launched the Gemilang programme. Google Gemilang is Google’s new digital training initiative aimed at helping the nation’s workforce in developing current digital skills, unlocking new opportunities and gaining access to high demand jobs.

Marc Woo, managing director of Google Malaysia also announced that under the Google Gemilang programme, Google will be providing 31,000 scholarships that will be distributed through their web of local partners comprising of non-profits, education institutions and industry partners.

In his address, Woo highlighted that Google recognizes the importance for Malaysians to band together to realize Malaysia’s digital vision and that Gemilang is one of the many efforts that Google has in store to bolster the country’s digitalization journey.

Under the Grow with Google programme, Google has also set up a employer consortium to connect job seekers graduating from Gemilang with prospective employers looking for local digital talent.

“To ensure the growth of our digital economy supports as many Malaysians as possible, we are committed to supporting a more equitable and inclusive digital ecosystem. One that is built for every Malaysian and this is a vision we cannot realize alone,” he said.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed also attended the launching event, which was held at Google’s office in Kuala Lumpur.

The Google Career Certificates offered under the Google Gemilang programme are self paced online training courses made available on the popular e-learning platform Coursera and are designed for all learners regardless of experience. There are six certifications offered under the programme currently: data analytics, IT support, IT automation, project management, UX Design, and digital marketing and e-commerce.

Trainocate and Google Gemilang

Trainocate x Google Gemilang

“Lifelong learning has been embedded in the Trainocate DNA since its inception. But, over the years we were also made aware that the process of knowledge gain can be inequitable. So, when Trainocate Malaysia was approached to be a part of the Google Gemilang programme, we could not turn down the offer to work hand in hand with Google Malaysia to provide digital upskilling opportunities to underserved communities across Malaysia to bridge our nation’s digital divide. It goes without saying that digital skills are the need of the hour to ensure our workforce remains resilient as we enter the hypercompetitive world of the digital economy. “

Ruby Kaur, Country Manager, Trainocate Malaysia

Trainocate will be working alongside Google as one of the official scholarship distribution partners, sharing the same commitment with Google in helping strengthen the workforce to remain resilient and innovative as we join the rest of the world in the digital economy.

Trainocate will be connecting with individuals and organizations that work with or are a part of the underserved communities (women; individuals from rural areas; and those whom are socioeconomically disadvantaged) that Google has targeted the scholarships towards. Trainocate acknowledges that the learning journey has not been a level playing field for everyone. The aforementioned categories were often sidelined from field, which will have adverse effects on the long term growth of Malaysia’s economy.

As stated by Woo, in order for Malaysia to prosper in the age of digitalization, the process of knowledge attainment has to place importance on the element of inclusivity.

Are you a woman or an individual (male OR female) from a non urban area or are from the B40 community, wanting to upskill yourself to unlock new opportunities within your career or secure a new job with some of the top companies in Malaysia?
