Overview

In this two-days APS: Applying Professional Scrum class, students learn to apply Professional Scrum. They experience new, agile ways of working that enable teams to deliver more value, satisfy stakeholders and work better together. Students work together as a team in a series of Sprints to solve complex problems, facing similar challenges that they face outside of class and learning how to use Scrum to address them.

These Sprints enable students to see the practical application of Scrum and to understand the value of an Agile mindset. Additionally, these Sprints expose common missteps and misunderstandings often seen while using Scrum, allowing students to develop an awareness of the associated symptoms and how to correct them. Students not only learn Scrum; they learn how to use Scrum well.

What is the difference between Agile and Scrum?

In 2025’s dynamic digital landscape, Agile and Scrum remain foundational to effective project delivery. Agile is a flexible mindset/principles-based philosophy, while Scrum is a structured framework to implement Agile. This refined guide explores their key differences with clarity and relevance to modern software and business teams.

Why train with Trainocate

The requirement for gaining certification is passing one of our online Professional-level Assessments with a score of 85% or higher. Taking a Scrum.org class is a great way to prepare you for success when taking our professional assessments, but it is not a requirement.

The requirement for gaining a Professional Scrum certification is passing one of our online Professional-Level Assessments with a score of 85% or higher.

The Scrum Guide, authored by Scrum co-creators Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, is the first place to start to learn about Scrum, and has been agreed upon as the definitive source of Scrum. It is available for free in over 30 different languages. The Professional-Level Assessments, however, are available in English only.

All Scrum.org assessments use the most recent version of the English Scrum Guide as the source for questions regarding the rules, artifacts, events, and roles of Scrum. However, reading the Scrum Guide alone is not enough for someone to pass a Professional Scrum Assessment. Questions often ask test-takers to interpret information and apply it to challenging situations, so knowledge gained from personal experience and other sources is typically needed.

Scrum.org and the Scrum Alliance are separate organizations with different leadership, missions, focus, and approaches. A few of the key differences can be seen in our courses and certifications.

Differences in the certifications:

  • PSM I (through Scrum.org) requires that a student demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of Scrum through a rigorous assessment. PSM I certification is detached from the course. It is not proof of attendance, but is rather proof of Scrum knowledge. The PSM I and the PSM II assessments and corresponding certifications do not require attendance in a Scrum.org class. Scrum.org certificates are lifelong, and do not require any additional payments or renewals.
  • CSM (through the Scrum Alliance) requires a student attend a course through the Scrum Alliance and then take an “exam” in which the passing score needed is only 69%. This certification is little more than a certificate of attendance, and requires credential holders to pay renewal fees in order to keep their certifications active.

Differences in the courses:

  • Scrum.org creates and maintains standardized curriculum, context and depth for all Professional Scrum courses and selects only the most qualified instructors to deliver them. Each instructor may have his or her individual experiences and areas of expertise, but all students learn the same core course content. This improves a student’s ability to pass the Professional Scrum assessments and apply Scrum in their workplaces. You can be confident in the quality and value the training will provide. Those who attend a Scrum.org course will also receive a complementary password to attempt one of our professional-level assessments for certification.
  • The Scrum Alliance does not have any standardization for its courses or content. The course materials are created by the individual trainers, and are limited by that particular trainer’s experience and opinion. Attendance in a Scrum Alliance course is required for earning a CSM, CSPO or CSD certification.

Unlike Scrum Alliance certifications, Scrum.org certificates are lifelong and do not require any additional payments or renewals.
