PRINCE2 Explained

How to get certified

PRINCE2 Project Management Training & Certification.

The goal of any project manager is to deliver projects on time, to scope and within budget. PRINCE2 guides you through the stages of a project’s lifecycle, bringing structure and a common language to your projects. It represents the “how to” of project management: it is flexible, scalable, and can be tailored to meet your specific requirements.

PRINCE2 is based upon the tried and tested experience of project management practitioners around the world, and provides the themes, principles, and processes to deliver successful projects of any size and complexity.

The PRINCE2 certification scheme helps you to acquire knowledge of the PRINCE2 method, providing you with the skills and understanding to successfully manage projects of any size or complexity. The training and certification consists of two levels:

PRINCE2 Foundation

PRINCE2 Foundation provides the theoretical knowledge of how to plan, manage and deliver projects from start to finish. A pass at Foundation level is a prerequisite for the Practitioner certification.

PRINCE2 Practitioner

PRINCE2 Practitioner extends the knowledge acquired at Foundation level to enable you to apply and tailor the method in a live working environment.

PRINCE2 is a project management method widely adopted around the world*, used by people and organizations from wide-ranging industries and sectors.

It is a flexible method that guides you through the essentials for managing successful projects, regardless of type or scale. Built upon seven principles, themes and processes, PRINCE2 can be tailored to meet your specific requirements.

The PRINCE2 method comprises four integrated elements of principlesthemesprocesses and the project environment.

Principles

These are the guiding requirements and good practices which determine whether the project is genuinely being managed using PRINCE2. There are seven principles and unless all of them are applied, it is not a PRINCE2 project.

The seven PRINCE2 principles are:
  1. Continued business justification: there must be a justifiable reason to be running and managing the project. If not, the project should be closed.
  2. Learn from experience: PRINCE2 project teams should continually seek and draw on lessons learned from previous work.
  3. Defined roles and responsibilities: the PRINCE2 project team should have a clear organizational structure and involve the right people in the right tasks.
  4. Manage by stages: PRINCE2 projects should be planned, monitored and controlled on a stage-by-stage basis.
  5. Manage by exception: people working within the project should be given the right amount of authority to effectively work within the environment.
  6. Focus on products: PRINCE2 projects focus on the product definition, delivery and quality requirements.
  7. Tailor to suit the project environment: PRINCE2 must be tailored to suit the project’s environment, size, complexity, importance, capability and risk.

Themes

These describe aspects of project management that must be addressed in parallel throughout the project. The seven themes explain the specific treatment required by PRINCE2 for various project management disciplines and why they are necessary.

PRINCE2 helps people apply the themes by stating the minimum requirement needed for each theme, and gives specific guidance on how to tailor to certain environments.

The seven PRINCE2 themes:

  1. Business case: create and maintain a record of the business justification for the project.
  2. Organization: define the individual roles and responsibilities of the whole project team.
  3. Quality: what the quality requirements and measures are and how the project will deliver them.
  4. Plans: the steps required to develop the plans and the PRINCE2 techniques that should be used.
  5. Risk: effectively identify risks and opportunities that could impact the project.
  6. Change: how the project manager will assess and act on changes to the project.
  7. Progress: the ongoing viability and performance of the plans and how and whether the project should proceed.

Processes

These describe the steps of the project lifecycle, from the initial idea to project closure (and measurement of the benefits). Each process provides checklists of recommended activities, related responsibilities and guidance about how to tailor to a specific environment.

The seven PRINCE2 processes:

  1. Starting up a project
  2. Directing a project
  3. Initiating a project
  4. Controlling a stage
  5. Managing product delivery
  6. Managing stage boundaries
  7. Closing a project

Frequently Asked Questions

PRINCE2 is a non-proprietary method used extensively in more than 150 countries around the world, and its take-up grows daily. It is widely considered as the leading method in project management, with more than two million certifications taken worldwide and in excess of 20,000 organizations already benefiting from its pioneering and trusted approach. This is largely due to the fact that PRINCE2 is truly generic and universal: it can be applied to any project regardless of scale, type, organization, geography or culture.

PRINCE2 comprises a set of principles, a set of control themes, a process lifecycle and guidance on matching the method to the project’s environment. PRINCE2 provides a process model for managing a project. This consists of a set of activities that are required to direct, manage and deliver a project.

PRINCE2 provides the following benefits:

  • It can be applied to any type of project
  • It provides a common vocabulary and approach
  • It integrates easily with industry-specific models
  • The product focus clarifies for all parties what the project will deliver to agreed quality standards
  • It applies ‘management by exception’ providing efficient use of senior management time
  • It ensures a focus on the continuing viability of the project
  • There are scores of accredited training and consultancy organizations operating worldwide, which can supply expert support for PRINCE2 projects or for organizations planning to adopt PRINCE2
  • It provides explicit definitions of roles and responsibilities so that everyone understands what is expected of them and what to expect of others.
  • Career advancement: Many organizations require or prefer that project management professionals have PRINCE2 certification, and achieving this qualification can open up new career opportunities or lead to promotions.
  • Improved credibility: PRINCE2 certification demonstrates to employers and clients that an individual has a certain level of expertise in project management and is committed to continuing professional development.
  • Enhanced skills and knowledge: The PRINCE2 certification process involves learning about the method and how to apply it in practice, which can help individuals to develop their skills and knowledge in project management.
  • Improved project success: By following the PRINCE2 method, organizations can increase the likelihood of successful project delivery. PRINCE2 certified professionals are equipped with the knowledge and skills to apply the method effectively, which can contribute to the success of projects they work on.
  • Professional recognition: PRINCE2 is a widely recognized qualification, and achieving certification can be seen as a mark of professional accomplishment.

PRINCE2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) and PMP (Project Management Professional) are both project management methods and certifications. While they have some similarities, they also have some key differences:

  1. Origins and focus: PRINCE2 is a project management method that was developed in the UK, while PMP is a certification offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI), a global professional association for project management. PRINCE2 is based on a process-based approach and focuses on the business justification for a project, defined roles and responsibilities for project management, and a flexible and scalable approach to project planning and control. PMP, on the other hand, is based on the PMI’s Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and focuses on the application of a specific set of project management knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques.
  2. Certification process: Both PRINCE2 and PMP have a certification process that involves completing a training course and passing an exam. However, the specific requirements for each certification differ. For example, PMP requires candidates to have a certain level of education and project management experience, while PRINCE2 does not have any prerequisites for the Foundation certification.
  3. Popularity: PRINCE2 is particularly popular in the UK and some other countries, while PMP is widely recognized and used globally.

Ultimately, whether PRINCE2 or PMP is the best option for you will depend on your career goals, the requirements of your job or industry, and your personal preferences. It’s important to carefully consider the time and financial investment required for each certification and weigh it against the potential benefits to your career before making a decision.
