Here’s what the Amazon chief, Andy Jassy had to say to about AI at Amazon:

“The way we think about technology – and this goes for AI as well – is that we’re not using it because we think it’s cool, we’re using it because we’re trying to solve customer problems.

That’s why when we talk about AI, it’s typically less to announce that we beat the best world-class chess player of the world and more to allow you to have better recommendations and personalized recommendations in our retail business. Or to equip our pickers and our fulfilment centers with the optimal path so we can get items to you faster. Or to put it In our primary drones, where we hope to deliver items to you in less than an hour in a couple years. Or for our just walk out technology, our Amazon Go stores. Or to fuel Alexa. Or to provide you with the 25+ AWS AI services so you can build great applications on top of our services.”

Andy Jassy emphasized that Amazon’s approach to AI isn’t about flashy achievements but solving real-world problems for customers.

Ready to dive in?

Let’s unpack these epic announcements and see how they’re rewriting the rules of what’s possible in the cloud. Key Updates:

AWS unveiled the next generation of Amazon SageMaker, transforming it into a one-stop platform for data exploration, analytics, and AI development. At its core is the new SageMaker Unified Studio (preview)—a centralized environment integrating tools from Amazon Athena, Amazon EMR, AWS Glue, Amazon Redshift, and more. This platform unifies big data processing, fast SQL analytics, and generative AI development, making it easier for organizations to build and deploy ML models.

Some standout features include SageMaker Lakehouse for unified data management, SageMaker AI for scalable model training, and the integration of Amazon Bedrock IDE (preview) for generative AI applications. With enhanced governance and processing tools, SageMaker aims to revolutionize how businesses handle their data-driven workflows.

Amazon is not only advancing foundational models but also democratizing machine learning (ML) through Amazon Q Developer, now available in Amazon SageMaker Canvas.

Amazon Q Developer empowers business analysts, marketing analysts, data analysts, and engineers—experts in their domains but without ML experience—to build accurate, production-quality ML models. Using natural language interactions, Amazon Q Developer guides users in breaking down business problems, analyzing data, and building customized ML models step-by-step. It transforms raw data by removing anomalies, evaluates multiple models, and recommends the best one—all while providing users full control and visibility into the guided ML workflow.

This not only makes ML more accessible across organizations but also fosters faster innovation with reduced time to market. By enabling domain experts to solve their specific challenges independently, Amazon Q Developer reduces reliance on ML experts, allowing them to focus on more complex technical problems.

For instance, a marketing analyst could simply state, “I want to predict home sales prices using home characteristics and past sales data,” and Amazon Q Developer will translate this into a complete ML workflow. It analyzes the data, builds multiple models, and recommends the most effective one.

Key Benefits of Amazon Q Developer:

  • Natural Language Interaction: Makes ML accessible even to non-technical users.
  • Step-by-Step Guidance: Simplifies the process of building and evaluating custom ML models.
  • Automation of Complex Tasks: Automates data preprocessing and anomaly removal.
  • Faster Time-to-Market: Speeds up innovation by reducing reliance on technical teams.
  • Domain-Specific Solutions: Aligns ML capabilities with unique business needs, from marketing to operations.

With innovations like Amazon Q Developer, AWS continues to break down barriers to ML adoption, enabling businesses to harness the full power of AI regardless of their technical expertise.

AWS introduced Amazon Nova, a next-generation suite of foundation models designed for exceptional price performance and flexibility in generative AI tasks. Available exclusively in Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Nova offers two types of models—understanding models (for text and visual intelligence) and creative content generation models (for images and videos).

Foundational models, such as those in the Amazon Nova series, are reshaping how businesses operate and influencing daily life in ways you may not realize. From voice assistants providing perfectly tailored recipes to email drafts polished with professional language, these models power a wide range of applications. Unlike traditional AI models that are designed for single tasks, foundational models are general-purpose systems trained on vast datasets, capable of handling multiple applications with minimal adaptation. For example, a single foundational model can write an email, analyze an image, and summarize a video with impressive accuracy.

Amazon Nova foundational models deliver state-of-the-art intelligence with industry-leading price performance, making advanced AI more accessible to businesses of all sizes. Coupled with Trainium2 chips, these innovations remove barriers that have historically made large-scale AI adoption prohibitively expensive or complex.

Key models in the Nova family include:

  • Amazon Nova Micro: A cost-efficient text-only model for tasks like summarization, translation, and coding.
  • Amazon Nova Lite: A multimodal model for real-time interactions and document analysis, capable of processing both text and visuals.
  • Amazon Nova Pro: A high-performing model excelling in complex reasoning, visual intelligence, and large-scale data processing.
  • Amazon Nova Canvas: A state-of-the-art image generation model producing studio-quality images with precise control over style and content. It offers rich editing features such as inpainting, outpainting, and background removal. Nova Canvas sets the bar high, excelling in human evaluations and benchmarks like TIFA (text-to-image faithfulness evaluation) and ImageReward.
  • Amazon Nova Reel: A cutting-edge video generation model that enables the creation of professional-quality short videos from text prompts and images. Nova Reel provides control over visual style and pacing, making it ideal for marketing, advertising, and entertainment. It outperforms existing models in human evaluations of video quality and consistency.
