In March 2020, Malaysian offices fell silent almost overnight. Millions of employees packed up their laptops and went home, uncertain when, or if, they had been back at their desks. What had been a slow burning, “someday” digital transformation strategy became an overnight survival requirement. Remote work was not a future initiative anymore. It was the only way businesses stayed alive.

Fast forward to today, and the story has quietly flipped. Malaysia’s digital economy is no longer a bet on the future; it is already here and playing an increasingly important role in the country’s growth. Digital investments contributed to Malaysia’s 5.1% GDP expansion in 2024, while approved investments under the Malaysia Digital initiative surged 250% from the previous year. The country’s digital infrastructure has also expanded rapidly, supported by more than RM86 billion in data centre investment in 2024 alone, according to the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). Together, these developments reflect Malaysia’s growing ambition to strengthen the digital economy as a major pillar of national growth.

On paper, this looks like a success story. Underneath it, there is a much less comfortable question, one that should matter to every business leader, IT manager and HR head in the country:

Does Malaysia have enough skilled people to run all of this?

The uncomfortable answer, based on the data, is not yet.

Research published in the Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized Computing confirms what most of us lived through: the COVID-19 pandemic sharply increased reliance on cloud computing and accelerated cloud adoption worldwide. Cloud technologies became the backbone of business continuity, keeping employees connected, keeping applications running, and keeping customers served through a period of unprecedented disruption.

AWS made a similar observation in its paper Reexamining Business Agility through the Lens of COVID-19: the pandemic was not really a story about business continuity. It was a story about organisational agility. The businesses that had already invested in cloud technology before the crisis were the ones able to adapt fast, scale operations, and respond when the ground shifted beneath them. Resilience, it turns out, is not built during a crisis. It’s built long before one.

1. The AI-ready talent shortfall

81% of Malaysian employers struggle to hire AI talent, even though 90% of them say AI skills are now a hiring priority (2024 study).

QS’s World Future Skills Index 2025 ranked Malaysia 33rd out of 83 countries globally, and 7th in Asia, but flagged a stark gap between the country’s academic readiness score (91.2) and its actual capacity to convert that education into economic transformation (35.4).

Jobs Facing Disruption

According to QS, around 620,000 jobs across 10 key sectors in Malaysia are now at risk from AI, digitalisation and green-economy shifts.

AI-Ready Professionals

Only around one in five professionals in Malaysia consistently show the traits associated with being “AI-ready”: persistence, curiosity and reflective learning (Epitome Global, 2023 to 2025).

Digital Skills ≠ AI Readiness

More than 70% of workers report strong digital literacy, yet 56% rate themselves only “basic” in decision-making, and 42% describe only basic confidence in computational thinking, precisely the skills needed to supervise AI tools, question their outputs, and fold them properly into daily work.

As Epitome Global’s CEO Kevin Chan put it, AI tools are now scaling faster than workforce readiness, meaning the real competitive differentiator in 2026 is not who has access to the technology, but who knows how to use it well.

2. The cybersecurity gap is even sharper

Malaysia’s Cybersecurity Talent Gap Is Widening

Separate industry estimates put the country’s cybersecurity workforce shortfall at around 12,000 people relative to the 27,000 knowledge workers needed by end-2025, a gap that needs roughly 3,677 new skilled workers a year just to close.

Cyber Threats Are Rising Faster Than the Workforce Can Keep Up

CyberSecurity Malaysia logged 2,778 fraud cases in 2024 alone, on top of rising ransomware and data-breach incidents, so this shortfall isn’t a hypothetical risk sitting in a slide deck.

3. AI adoption is wide, but shallow

Malaysia captured 32% of all Southeast Asian AI funding between mid-2024 and mid-2025, around USD 759 million.

Tech Giants Pour Billions Into Malaysia

Four global tech giants have collectively committed more than USD 15 billion to build AI and cloud infrastructure in the country.

SME AI Adoption Remains Low

Yet only 12% of Malaysian SMEs had adopted AI in any meaningful way as of 2024.
