Overview

Professional Scrum Product Owner – Advanced (PSPO-A) is a hands-on, activity-based course that focuses on helping experienced Product Owners and Product Managers expand their ability to establish a vision, validate their hypotheses, and ultimately deliver more value to their stakeholders.

The course goes beyond the topics explored in the Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO) class by deepening the attendee’s understanding of the role through the exploration of the many stances of a professional Product Owner.

Students should have at least one year of Product Owner experience and a practical knowledge of Scrum in order to participate in and benefit from these exercises. Having previously taken the PSPO class is recommended, but not required.

The course also includes a free attempt at the globally recognized Professional Scrum Product Owner II (PSPO II) certification exam.

Skills Covered

  • Experienced Product Owners will learn different stances a Product Owner takes in order to navigate everyday challenges
  • Modern complementary practices will be introduced through discussions, case studies and exercises
  • Students will leave with a clear understanding of Agile Product Management as they continue on their Product Owner journey
  • Learn about the various types of stakeholders that Product Owners represent and how to best work with them.

Prerequisites

Attendees make the most of the class if they (recommended but not required):

  • Have studied the Scrum Guide.
  • Have a solid understanding of Scrum either through working on a Scrum Team, or through taking part in a Professional Scrum Foundations or similar course.
  • Have been on or are closely involved with the product management aspects of a software product or application.

Target Audience

This Product Owner advanced training course is designed for Product Owners, Product Managers, and Business Analysts focusing heavily on Product Management skills, tools, techniques, and knowledge as part of their work on the Scrum Team. The course does not address the Scrum framework (much), and we assume people have a proper understanding of the Scrum framework. Participants should have at least one year of experience as a Product Owner or Product Manager, while multiple years of experience and having attended the Professional Scrum Product Owner course and passing PSPO is preferred, but not mandatory.

Other people that might benefit from the PSPO-A course include:

  • Scrum Masters / Agile Coaches
  • Company leaders

Course Curriculum

Module 1: Understanding Your Products

  • What makes a Product? Is your product solving an existing problem or is creating a new segment? Will someone pay to buy your products? And many more such questions help you to get into the details of a product.

Module 2: Who Are Your Customers?

  • Knowing your customers is the key to build a successful product. Understanding the demographics, their journeys and needs helps you to build a product which creates value for the business and society.

Module 3: Connecting Product Features to Customer Outcomes

  • One of the challenges with many products is that they are not focused on customer needs or outcomes; they are typically driven by ideas of some HIPPO in the organization. For ex: A toothpaste comes with activated charcoal but how many of us have switched to it?

Module 4: Communicating The Product Vision and Strategy

  • The vision for a product is the future state and it is the Product Owners responsibility that everyone involved in the product understands it. The vision also helps to articulate how value could be generated and hence communicating it in an effective way is important.

Module 5: Value and Pricing Models

  • How is value and price different? What is value? What is price? How do we measure value? We will take a closer look at what are different models which a Product Owner can use to identify and deliver value.

Module 6: Innovation and Experimentation

  • As a Product Owner being open to experimentation is key to generating more value and revenue for the product. As a PO how do we enable experimentational and innovation within our teams.

Module 7: Stakeholders and Stakeholder Management

  • Not every stakeholder is important, not every stakeholder needs to be satisfied. But how do we know who is who? Understanding stakeholders and managing their expectations is an art which PO has to master.

Module 8: Agile Governance, Budgeting and Contracting in Relation to Scrum

  • There are many aspects which are outside of the purview of Scrum, such as budgeting, then how is it handled and what is the role of PO in budgeting? How can PO support budgeting in an agile environment.

Module 9: Scaling the Product Owner Role

  • Our product is huge, should we have more Product Owners? There are 10 different teams working on the Product, do we need 10 Product Owners? And many more such questions will be addressed as we understand how to scale the PO role.

Training & Certification Guide

The Professional Scrum Product Owner level II (PSPO II) assessment is available to anyone who wishes to validate their advanced knowledge of Professional Scrum Product Ownership, the Scrum framework, and delivering valuable products. Those who pass the assessment will receive the industry recognized PSPO II Certification to demonstrate their mastery of the content.

While taking a course is not required, the Professional Scrum Product Owner Advanced: Mastering the Product Owner Stances course is highly recommended.  A 2-day class will not be sufficient preparation for most people to pass the PSPO II. Passing the PSPO II will require you to call upon your own knowledge and experience. If you feel you already possess a high level of knowledge and experience you have the option to purchase a password and take the PSPO II without attending a class.

The PSPO II assessment is grounded in the Professional Scrum Product Owner subject areas outlined on the Suggested Reading page. The assessment is in place to ensure you understand the Product Owner role and therefore detailed in its questions and required answers.  Many questions ask the test-taker to think about or interpret the meaning from the Scrum Guide and/or to apply content from the PSPO II subject areas and in some cases, apply their own experience.

  • Fee: $250 USD per attempt
  • Passing score: 85%
  • Time limit: 60 minutes
  • Number of Questions: 40 (partial credit provided on some questions)
  • Format: Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer
  • Difficulty: Advanced
  • Language: English only

If you pass the PSPO II assessment you will receive the industry-recognized “PSPO II” certification, along with a PSPO II logo that you can use to identify your achievement. In addition, your name will be listed on Scrum.org.

Unlike other Scrum certifications that require only class attendance, Scrum.org certification requires a minimum score on an online assessment. This gives Scrum.org certification teeth and ensures that it has true value in the marketplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Scrum.org training provides a hands-on, activity-based learning experience using a consistent set of materials around the world no matter which of our Professional Scrum Trainers (PSTs) is teaching the course. Each course explores real-world challenges to help students apply what they learn in their roles once back at work.

Each Scrum.org course is assigned 2 stewards who work with the PST community to crowdsource the maintenance of the courseware. The stewards are ultimately responsible for collecting input on the course materials, both those that exist and potentially additions to be made and provide updates as required.

On their path to becoming a PST, they must have several years of Scrum experience. Once PST candidates apply, they then go through an extensive process that includes: interviews, validation of knowledge, training, peer reviews and more.

PSTs bring their own style and experiences with a consistent delivery of Scrum.org training around the world, so you know each course we teach is aligned with Professional Scrum, and all of your teammates are learning from the same course materials.

Students of Scrum.org courses are able to claim Project Management Institute (PMI) PDU credit: 14 PDUs after attending a two-day Professional Scrum Master (PSPO) course. Please note that PMI PDUs are earned for course attendance and not for passing a Scrum.org assessment. Students can claim PDUs under PMI’s “Education courses provided by other third party providers” category. You can claim your PDUs online at https://ccrs.pmi.org.
